A Northwest humanitarian group is mobilizing to help two areas hit by natural disasters in the past week. Mercy Corps is ready to assist Hurricane Dean survivors in Mexico, and is already working in Peru after last week's 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

It's turning out to be a busy fall for the organization, and donations are being invited to help with both clean-up efforts. Mercy Corps' Director of Health Programs, Carlos Cardenas, is a native of Peru, and he's there now. He says their focus will be on the hard-hit suburbs of cities that are still without water and power.

"There are a lot of smaller villages surrounding these larger cities that don't get the same kind of attention that the big cities get, in terms of support and assistance."

Cardenas says in addition to emergency aid, the longer-term plan is to help get water systems and schools up and running again in Southern Peru.

"We are going to be focusing our effort to help rebuild some of the very basic infrastructure that they need to keep up with their livelihood."

To distribute aid more quickly, Mercy Corps is working with another organization, Partners of the Americas, that also is active in the area. The quake in Peru has left more than 500 dead and displaced 80,000; Mexico is still tallying its damage figures.

Donations can be earmarked either for the "Hurricane Dean Fund" or the "Peru Earthquake Fund" at Mercy Corps, PO Box 2669, Portland, OR 97208.
