Philadelphia, PA – "Wind, not windfalls." Volunteers will protest at a gas station in Philadelphia today, hoping their message gets all the way to Congress. Handing out billions in taxpayer subsidies to big oil companies, that already are posting record profits in the billions, is not okay with them. Rachel Martin with the Pennsylvania Sierra Club says the same kinds of incentives need to be just as readily available for alternative energy development, whether it be wind power for homes, or biofuels for cars and trucks.

"Extend those tax incentives for a longer time period, in order to give the industry some stability. A good way to fund that is through all these tax breaks that are being given to the big oil companies."

Oil companies say the subsidies help lower prices. Martin counters that, with prices at near-record levels along with company profits, many consumers are finding that hard to believe. She also believes subsidies should be invested more wisely, focusing on longer-term solutions, both for the financial health of families and the overall health of the environment.

"It's better to spend on something that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, decrease our global warming problems and, at the same time, help to create good, 'green' jobs."

Today's demonstration is at 3:30 PM at the corner of Broad and Bainbridge, Philadelphia. In addition, a "tax day" protest is scheduled in Pittsburgh on Tuesday at the Squirrel Hill Post Office, 1800 Murray Avenue, Pittsburgh.
