Des Moines, IA – In less than six months, Iowans will be joining the rest of the country in voting for President, members of Congress and state legislators. While candidates are campaigning for all of these offices, a number of rural groups are joining forces to make sure the office-seekers pay attention to the issues concerning rural America.

Niel Ritchie, director of the League of Rural Voters, says four of them are key: "The quality of education our young people receive; access to affordable health care in all parts of our communities; protection of our natural resources as we work to create more jobs; and access to adequate investment capital for new businesses."

Several national groups, including the League of Rural Voters are forming a "Rural Compact" to bring an outreach campaign to county fairs and community events in Iowa and elsewhere this summer. The effort is meant to encourage people to sign on to the compact's principles, Ritchie says, and they will be presented to candidates.

Ritchie believes there are dramatic challenges facing rural Iowa, and communities are feeling the strain.

"Attracting health care professionals, paying for schools and education, and simply maintaining our basic infrastructure -- our roads and bridges -- are all challenges. They all became more difficult in the last year."

More information on the Rural Compact is available online at www.leagueofruralvoters.org.
