The Wait Continues for Iowa Kids in Foster Care

Des Moines, IA - A bill under consideration in Congress would benefit thousands of Iowa children in foster care, but they're going to have to wait until lawmakers return from their summer recess. Many kids in foster care in Iowa either end up being placed in multiple homes or "age out" of the system without ever finding a permanent home. The U.S. Senate was about to consider House-passed bill HR6307, which would provide critical support for youth in foster care.

Beth Davis Pratt with the Children's Defense Fund explains there are 5,000 children in foster care in Iowa, and over a half million children nationally, with no permanent home.

"We have 129,000 children in this country waiting for adoption and 26,000 of them age out of foster care every year. That is why we really believe that these provisions are critical for all of those children."

Pratt says the bill includes something called the "Adoption Incentives Program."

"It has helped approximately 450,000 children find adoptive homes since it was enacted in the late 1990s. Unfortunately, the program will expire on September 30 unless action is taken."

Iowa continues to have a need for foster parents. Anyone interested in knowing how to become one may call the Iowa Dept. of Human Services, 515-281-6220.
