Stimulus Money: Not on Trees, But Still Unclaimed in NM

Albuquerque, NM – Money doesn't grow on trees, but there's still plenty of free cash going unclaimed in New Mexico--about $10 million. That's the total owed to more than 30,000 New Mexicans who haven't filed for their economic stimulus payment.

Carrie Resch with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says it takes a little extra paperwork for those who don't usually file income tax returns, which can discourage some people. She adds that some rumors going around also may be causing hesitation.

"People may have thought that it may affect the federal benefits that they are currently receiving. That's not true. Other people have thought the stimulus payments will be taxable, but they are not."

Donna Cohen Ross with the Center on Budget Policy and Priorities says her group's research shows most of those missing out on the money are people in the 60-plus set, veterans and/or people with disabilities.

"When you think about what kinds of financial constraints people are facing, the $300 payment can really make a huge difference."

She says the estimated number of people who haven't claimed their check in New Mexico could even be low, because it doesn't count some low-income residents. In order to receive a stimulus payment, a person must file a tax return, but only a few lines of the 1040-A IRS form need to be filled out. The deadline to file is Oct. 15.
