A Day to Say "No Way" To Kids and Gun Violence in VA

Richmond, VA – Following a short decline, the incidence of children killed in gun violence is rising in Virginia, and a worldwide remembrance today hopes to raise awareness and stop the trend. The Children's Defense Fund is leveraging the "Day of International Concern About Young People and Gun Violence" to publicize the work it has done for ten years tracking the deadly trend.

CDC spokesman Ed Shelleby says the effort to combat firearms violence can begin at hom.

"We have this romanticized notion of guns and violence in video games and movies, on television, on the Internet. If parents say, 'You know what? We're not going to give this to our children,' that would be a great first start. It is easiest to refuse to buy products for your children that glamorize guns."

Shelleby says years of progress against gun violence and youth are beginning to erode.

"The Children’s Defense Fund has been looking at gun violence data for more than a decade, and the most recently-released data is actually the first increase since 1994."

The latest federal statistics show more preschoolers nationwide are killed by firearms in a year than law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty. Some deaths are accidents, but most are murders.

Those opposed to changing gun laws cite interference with the constitutional right to bear arms.
