Lansing, MI - With Michigan's unemployment rate the highest in the nation, and hundreds of thousands out of work, most no longer have health care coverage. But, a two-year national health screening effort is attempting to improve the health of those who need it most. AARP and Walgreens have launched a $60-million mobile health screening tour, with the goal to deliver more than 2.5 million free screenings for early detection and prevention of diseases.

Stepheni Schlinker, spokesperson for AARP Michigan, says the screenings will test cholesterol levels, blood pressure, bone density, glucose levels, waist circumference and body mass index.

"These are things that are pretty typical issues for most people, and they'll help provide adults with a critical foundation for early disease detection and protection."

Early detection is the key to preventing more-serious health problems, adds Schlinker.

"If you can get ahead of those things and stop those diseases before they either happen or get too far down the road, then that's going to save a lot in health costs and it's going to prolong your life."

The health screenings, which are currently being held in Michigan, are for adults 18 and older. Information on the dates and locations are at www.aarpwalgreeens.com/tour.
