NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded the Special Olympics and become a leading advocate of people with mental disabilities, died on Tuesday at age 88. Shriver, the sister of former president John F. Kennedy, began the organization in 1963 working with swimmers with mental disabilities at a summer camp she ran in Maryland.

Alan Bolick, president of Special Olympics Tennessee, worked with Shriver for more than three decades. He believes her inspiration for the program was simple.

"From my conversations over the years with her, it was all stimulated by the thought that these were people who were being overlooked. Back in the 1960s and even into the early '70s, many people with mental retardation were warehoused in state institutions."

Shriver had also been motivated by the struggles of her mentally disabled sister, Rosemary. On Tuesday morning, Bolick shared an e-mail message he received from the mother of a Special Olympian, now 30 years old.

"It simply reads, 'We hung Jeff's medals on our flagpole for all to see. Who knows what my life and his would have been without the acceptance that she gave us for our children? She taught both of us to stand up tall.'"

Today, more than one million athletes from 160 countries participate in the Special Olympics.
