DES MOINES, Iowa - Dozens of environmental and faith groups from throughout the Midwest are calling for more investments in clean energy and energy efficiency. More than 50 such organizations signed on to a letter delivered to nine Midwest state governors, including Iowa Governor Chet Culver, ahead of next month's Midwest Governors' Association meeting in Detroit.

Nathaniel Baer, energy program director with the Iowa Environmental Council, says the groups are looking for measures to help the Midwest become a leader in clean energy manufacturing. He says thousands of new jobs could be created in Iowa alone as the country moves to a clean-energy economy.

"To do that the governor can put in place a range of key policies developed with other governors and stakeholders in the Midwest. And this will help make sure that we move quickly to clean energy and to create much-needed jobs."

Some governors have expressed worries that stronger climate measures will raise costs and hurt businesses. However, Baer says implementing key energy-efficiency and renewable-energy policies will enhance the economy while helping the Midwest and the country transition to cleaner energy sources.

"For example, that would mean ensuring that significant quantities of our energy come from wind and other renewables and that we save as much energy as possible with energy efficiency. And then, separately, there's a rule that's been developed to create a regional cap-and-trade program. I think everybody would prefer that we have a national program, and that's what we're pushing for. But if Congress isn't able to get that done, then we have a regional program that we think is ready to go."

Baer says the faith community got involved in the issue, recognizing what they see as a moral imperative of taking action on climate change.

The Midwest Governors' Association meeting agenda this year is "Creating Jobs in the New Energy Economy."
