Late, But Not Too Late to Vote Local in MT

BILLINGS, Mont. - Missing the deadline is no big deal in Montana this week. Monday was the last day of regular voter registration in order to cast a ballot for next month's city council and commission races, but today late registration opens, and stays open until Election Day, November 3.

While the 2008 election saw a lot of hoopla with presidential, gubernatorial and congressional races on the ballot, Theresa Keaveny, executive director of the Montana Conservation Voters Education Fund, says the local decisions on elected leaders may matter most.

"They decide how our communities grow and develop. They decide issues related to transportation, trails, water, and our quality of life."

Keaveny says that sometimes these local races are decided by just a handful of voters, so every vote counts.

She notes that many Montana cities and towns have switched to using mailed ballots only for their local elections. Those ballots are supposed to arrive in mail boxes next week, and she expects some voters expecting ballots may not receive them; they'll need to take action.

"Those voters who are 'inactive' won't be receiving ballots. If they have not gotten a ballot and think they should, go to their county election office and find out how to get a ballot."

Montana residents who are U.S. citizens and 18 years or older are eligible to vote and can register at county election offices.
