Tribus de NM hablan sobre el clima con la Casa Blanca

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Líderes Nativo Americanos de Nuevo México y el resto de la nación han estado en Washington D.C. esta semana para la Conferencia de Tribus Nacionales en la Casa Blanca, y el cambio climático es uno de los temas principales para conversar entre la administración de Obama y las tribus.

John Antonio es el Gobernador de Laguna Pueblo y dice que los Pueblos de Nuevo México, junto con otras Tribus tienen mucho que perder con el avance rápido del cambio en el clima.

"Poblaciones de áreas salvajes, cuencas de agua, tenemos manantiales y cosas asi, y por su puesto con cualquier cambio en el clima comenzamos a perder muchos recursos provenientes del agua."

Explica Antonio que la energía nuclear a veces se le considera como una manera para reducir emisiones de carbón, pero dice que es una mala idea para las tribus porque muchas de las minas de uranio y operaciones de molinos se encuentran cerca de las reservaciones tribales donde también existen varios recursos de energía renovable.

"Es una amenaza directa a los recursos de agua. Claro también en términos de energía renovable tenemos el potencial –el gran potencial- de proveer energía solar."

Indica Antonio que hace sentido que las tribus tengan un lugar en la mesa de discusión en cuanto al cambio climático porque sus tierras son casi siempre las más afectadas. Añade que él, junto con otros líderes, está también buscando apoyo hacia proyectos de energía limpia en tierras tribales por parte de la Casa Blanca y el Congreso.
