MESA, Ariz. - A trio of skilled volunteers nearing retirement is helping Mesa museums better serve their patrons in a time of shrinking city revenues. The leadership volunteers are tackling projects ranging from sharpening marketing plans to designing new informational signs.

Arizona Museum for Youth director Sunnee Spencer says one volunteer updated their Web site.

"Our Web site was un-navigable, and it was confusing to people. There were things about it that we really needed to have. For example, the ability to receive donations and for people to become members online."

The experienced career professionals are filling a different need than typical volunteers who conduct tours, or help with mailings, says Spencer.

"They are people who are able to come on board and be a brain trust for us, work autonomously, be part of the staff, and work side-by-side in self-directed teams. We weren't looking for someone we would have to tell, 'Here, go do this for us.'"

Volunteer Karen Sherman, who earned doctorates in education and museum studies, worked to help visitors who were getting lost in the Arizona Museum of Natural History. Sherman designed a new signage system to replace paper maps.

"As we well know, paper maps end up as airplanes and are left everywhere in the museum. So, we did some research and created wall maps that are placed strategically throughout the museum."

Sherman is also involved with exhibit planning, including surveys of museum visitors to determine the kinds of exhibits they'd like to see.

The over-55 volunteers receive a small stipend as part of a national grant from the Piper Trust and the National Council on Aging. Nine other Arizona groups received similar funding for projects involving baby boomer volunteers.
