Planned Parenthood: Health Care Value During Tough Times?

LAS VEGAS - Record high unemployment and a lack of health insurance may leave people with limited options for health care. Planned Parenthood wants people to know they provide affordable and accessible preventive care, such as routine Pap tests, cervical and breast cancer screening along with testicular screening for men, and even flu shots.

Annette Magnus, public affairs coordinator of Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada, says there is no need to risk your health, or let a sexually-transmitted disease go undetected, simply because you are running low on cash.

"Most of the services we provide at Planned Parenthood are about prevention, so we want to keep people safe and keep them healthy; in this economy, that's a really important thing to do. "

Magnus says all of their services are provided at affordable rates at all five Nevada Health Centers. Some services at the Flamingo location in Las Vegas are on a sliding scale, depending on the person's income.

And Magnus says, don't think Planned Parenthood is there just for women; they provide prevention services for men as well.

"We're definitely a safety net provider, especially in Las Vegas; we have screenings for men, we have screenings for women, we have midlife services for women, so we do a lot of things."

Planned Parenthood official Paula Gianino says that, even if a national health care bill passes, people will still need to monitor their health care costs, because some of the benefits won't go into effect right away.

"Those health care exchanges that will be created that will provide benefits and coverage for folks who are right now uninsured, those provisions will not go into effect for several years."

A change in the political landscape because of the Republican win in the Massachusetts Senate race may have brought the reform bill to a halt in Congress, and some say it's time to start over and work on a scaled-down version.
