PHOENIX, Ariz. - Arizona celebrates Earth Day today with events across the state. The observance was founded by the late Gaylord Nelson when he was a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. Forty years ago, Nelson conceived Earth Day as a "national teach-in on the environment."

His daughter, Tia Nelson, says a lot has been accomplished since then, following passage of the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and the Toxic Substances Control Act.

"If you were born after 1970, or 1980, you have an expectation for clean water and clean air that was not a given prior to the first Earth Day."

Nelson says grassroots-type celebrations are exactly the kinds of events her father envisioned, but at the same time he wanted the environment to be put in the political spotlight. Arizona events today include a livability summit in downtown Phoenix, volunteers installing plants in Peoria and a sustainability fair at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Protection of public lands is also a theme of Earth Day. Nelson says her father recognized the value of those lands in a business sense.

"Papa had an expression, a quote he often used: 'The economy is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the environment, not the other way around.'"

Other Arizona Earth Day observances include an Earth Day festival in Prescott and a campus-wide Earth Day celebration at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, titled "Keepin' it Fresh."

Listings of Earth Day events around the world are available at www.earthday.org.
