Gulf Oil Spill: From Crisis to Solutions

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Leading scientists, environmentalists, journalists and tourism specialists are holding a community forum on the oil spill tonight at St. Petersburg's Palladium Theater. The agenda includes the latest news on efforts to cap the gushing oil, the spill's impact on Florida's economy and environment, and ways Floridians can volunteer to help.

Darden Rice, Florida Director of the Gulf Restoration Network and one of the organizers of the event, says the goal is to arm the public with answers.

"There's a strong cry out for people who want to get more involved, who want to find out what is happening directly from sources that they trust. So this forum is a way to connect people to solutions."

One solution being discussed is the call for a state constitutional amendment banning drilling in state waters that may be considered in a special legislative session, along with a Clean Energy Plan for Florida.

"Our biggest concern is this push from the legislature to allow oil and gas drilling within state waters. That seems to be tabled for now, but there's a number of different groups who are looking for stronger protections. "

Rice says everyone will leave with information about how they can make a difference, like registering their boats to aid in rescue missions, or where to get training to help aid wildlife.

"It takes a great deal of training to work with oiled wildlife, it takes special training to work with toxic oil that washes up on the beach, so we are really trying to give people the best practical information to get involved, because there is a lot of frustration out there."

Rice says they will present President Obama's address to the nation about the spill live, and take questions from the audience afterward. She says the forum will highlight solutions to help Florida recover from this spill, and prevent another one.

The event is at the Palladium Theater at USF, St. Petersburg, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
