BOULDER, Colo. - There's a growing demand among value shoppers for a different set of values, according to Ted Ning, who heads of one of the largest gatherings of companies that serve health-oriented and eco-minded consumers.

"Things such as transparency, authenticity, communications back and forth – these are really, really important for people, and that's something that's always been a part of what LOHAS companies embody."

Ted Ning directs a business forum called LOHAS (short for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability). Businesses that target health and eco-minded consumers are gathering in Boulder, Colo., this week, and they say word on the Green street is this sector is "weathering the economic storm."

The last 16 months have been challenging, according to Joshua Onysko, founder and CEO of Pangea Organics, a maker of natural skin care products, but he says the values his company promotes are becoming more valuable.

"We're really proving that a company can make it in the world that has had its roots in social and environmental sustainability, and that the world is really looking for this."

The recession has actually been spurring more people to get involved in a cause-related activism, says Randy Paynter, founder of Care2, an online business activism site with more than 13 million members.

"With the economy, with things like the oil spill, with all of the challenges going on in the world right now, people are frustrated and they want an outlet."

LOHAS consumers make up between 13 and 19 percent of the population - up to one out of five Americans. Larger companies like Coca-Cola and eBay are also represented at the forum, which is hosting a special panel on the implications of the oil spill for health and sustainability Thursday. LOHAS runs through Friday in Boulder.
