Wyoming Pathways Mapped as a Route to Heart Health

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - It may sound simple, but walking is the single most-effective form of exercise to achieve heart health, plus it has the lowest drop-out rate of any exercise activity, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). To help folks take the first steps toward a walking routine, AHA has mapped out nearby routes that are walking-friendly in Wyoming communities.

Exercise physiologist Jenna Johnson says, while losing weight and improving cardio health are the long-term goals, there is also instant gratification.

"If people have not been very active, they're going to see some benefits right away. Even the day of the first walk, you are going to feel better."

Research has shown you can gain about two more hours of life for every one hour of regular, vigorous exercise, says Johnson. Also, better cardio health means lower health care expenses. Even when traveling for work or vacation, she encourages Wyomingites to keep a walking routine in place, and the AHA website helps make that happen.

"You can do a real quick search function, putting in your city and state, and it will show you where local walking paths are available."
