Cost of Adoption at All-Time High: Help for NV Families

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - With rules that vary from state to state and country to country, adopting a child can now cost $40,000 or more. And with no federal standards for adoption, families are often at the mercy of adoption agencies and attorneys to navigate the confusing process.

HelpUsAdopt.Org was started by Becky Fawcett and her husband in 2007. Fawcett says Nevadans can apply for a grant if they are in need of money to complete the adoption process and have a valid home study showing they are suitable parents. The application process is open to married couples, gay and lesbian couples, and to single parents, too, Fawcett says.

"Nevada is a very adoption-friendly state, which is lovely. If people knew about us...that's the hard part. A lot of people don't know we exist, don't know that there's a helping hand. It's a gift; this is not a loan."

There is no charge to apply for a grant. Applications for December 2010 grants are due Oct. 16, 2010; the deadline for June 2011 grants is April 15, 2011. Since 2007, HelpUsAdopt.Org, based in New York City, has awarded grants to families of 35 adopted children.

This year, international adoptions have become more costly, with countries like Russia and Haiti requiring adoptive parents to make multiple trips before they can bring their child home. When Becky Fawcett adopted her son, she says she was stunned by the cost, and that's why her nonprofit organization was founded.

"There's a big difference between not having the money to raise a child and not having the $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 sitting in a savings account to adopt a child."

Earlier this year, the federal government extended the adoption tax credit until December, 2011. Adoption advocates would like to see that tax credit made a permanent part of the tax code.

Information on how to apply for a grant is available at www.HelpUsAdopt.org.
