SEATTLE – Debido a cortes en el presupuesto, en menos de dos meses cambiará la elegibilidad para el programa "Working Connections" que ayuda a familias de bajos ingresos a pagar por cuidado de niños. Unas 2,500 familias y sus proveedores de cuidado de niños enfrentan decisiones difíciles.

Susan Brown, fundadora y presidente de los centros proveedores de cuidado de niños Kids Co. con varias sucursales en Puget Sound, dice que los cortes al presupuesto afectarán a las organizaciones como la suya. Su póliza es proveer cuidado a todo cliente, sin importar su situación financiera, pero los presupuestos de centros de cuidado de niños están ya bastante estrechados cuidando a niños de familias con bajos recursos.

"En el 2005 dimos $80,000 en becas de cuidado de niños para familias de bajos recursos. En lo que llevamos del 2010 hemos otorgado casi $250,000 en becas, cifra que demuestra cómo ha aumentado la necesidad."

Más de un tercio del dinero estatal apoya el cuidado de niños en edad escolar. Brown dice que encontrar cuidado de niños ha sido bastante difícil para familias de bajos ingresos, aún antes de estos cortes al presupuesto. Ahora predice que los padres estarán tomando decisiones difíciles sobre si dejar su trabajo o dejar a sus hijos solos en casa.

"Si. Eso es lo que tienen que decidir. En primera, sabemos que no todos los programas en el estado aceptan DSHS. Muchos programas en el estado solo aceptan un cierto número de niños bajo DSHS porque necesitan que otras familias paguen el precio completo de inscripción."

Los cambios comienzan en Octubre y se estima que ahorrarían casi $15 millones al estado. La Gobernadora Gregoire ha mencionado que el sector privado, las iglesias y organizaciones caritativas tendrán que tomar acción para compensar las pérdidas debidas a los cortes presupuestales. Brown añade que la mayoría de los fondos de Kids Co. provienen del sector privado.
