Las Cruces - Este es el Mes del Desierto en todo el país. Así fue declarado por el Presidente, y en Nuevo México es una excusa suficiente para armar la fiesta. Los partidarios de la iniciativa de ley que fue sometida al Congreso hace un año para proteger las montañas Organ y otras áreas cerca de Las Cruces, ofrecen este fin de semana el Festival Silvestre.
Nathan Small, Coordinador de Conservación de la New Mexico Wilderness Aliance (Alianza Silvestre de Nuevo México), comentó que durante ese año ha crecido significativamente el grupo que respalda las nuevas normas protectoras de las montañas Organ, Potrillo y Robledo, así como algunas partes del Broad Canyon (Cañón Ancho).
"Está la Cámara Hispana de Comercio, la Cámara Verde de Comercio, organizaciones de deportistas, los grupos conservacionistas locales y, lo más importente, muchos y muy diversos ciudadanos."
Algunas minorías opositoras han objetado la iniciativa dicendo que podría representar una amenaza para la seguridad nacional en la frontera, pero luego de los compromisos asumidos este verano, varios expertos en seguridad y un sub-jefe de la patrulla fronteriza apoyaron el plan.
Small está convencido de que proteger las montañas Organ es una inversión inteligente, sobre todo en una economía que se contrae.
"La gente de aquí le llama 'la gansa que puso el huevo de oro' cuando se refieren a las montañas Organ, y darle una protección estándar de oro, deveras atrae el interés y la atención y los dólares a esta área."
El Festival del Desierto ofrecerá comida gratis, música y actividades para niños el Domingo, de 1 a 4 de la tarde, en el Parque Young de Las Cruces.
