SACRAMENTO, Calif. – El poder entenderte mejor con tu médico también mejorará tu estado de salud. Los expertos dicen que esa es una manera de incrementar tu puntuación de literacidad en salud, que mide qué tan bien una persona puede encontrar y entender información sobre los servicios que necesitan para mantenerse saludables.

Se estima que nueve de diez adultos tienen problemas con literacidad en salud, cifra que no sorprende a Charee Gillins con el AARP de California. Ella dice que el cuidado de salud es complicado y muchas veces confuso, especialmente para adultos de la tercera edad, adultos de bajos ingresos y las minorías. Por eso su nuevo programa se enfoca en las comunidades afroamericanas.

"Muchos afroamericanos no van a ver a su médico con la frecuencia que necesitan y es ahí donde familiares y amigos pueden ser la solución. Ellos pueden ser la persona que convence a que vayan al doctor. Durante el mes de literacidad en salud estamos tratando de alentar a que individuos se comuniquen con su médico, pero tienen que ir a verlo."

Gillins añade que los recursos en el internet del AARP están diseñados para ayudar a empezar la conversación sobre el tema.

"Es importante decir que uno está preocupado por la salud de su ser querido y que quieres hablar sobre ello; después comentar que hay que hacer una cita con el médico y de ahí ayudarles a poner su historial médico en orden y escribir todas las enfermedades que han tenido anteriormente y los medicamentos que han tomado y están tomando actualmente."

Gillins dice que el siguiente paso es el de darle seguimiento a nuestro ser querido al apoyar a que en verdad este dando pasos hacia una forma de vida más saludable y que en verdad estén siguiendo las instrucciones que recibieron por parte del médico.
