LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) gets an overall grade of "C plus" on a new report card from The Wilderness Society. The group has tracked how the agency is doing in keeping the National Landscape Conservation System healthy and accessible to the public.

In Nevada, the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is part of the system, and it received mostly "B" grades for planning and protecting the character of the area. Kevin Mack, campaign director with The Wilderness Society, notes there has been a marked improvement in making information available to the public since the first report card was issued five years ago - both on-site and online.

"Not only is the information available, but it's actually of fairly high quality - including maps. Whether you're planning a visit or just looking to learn more, maps are an important part of telling the story."

Red Rock Canyon gets more than one million visitors a year, although budget cutbacks have reduced the paid staff to only three. Therefore, Mack says, it's fortunate that these lands attract lots of volunteers. In fact, they account for 40 percent of BLM's volunteerism, even though they make up only 10 percent of BLM holdings.

"People want to not only enjoy these lands, but they're also willing to lend a helping hand. That can leverage some scarce dollars, but you also need to have some of those scarce dollars in order to actually have something to leverage against."

National Conservation Lands are growing in popularity, drawing up to a third of total visitors to all BLM lands, Mack says. The report card indicates improvements are needed across the system in protecting wild and primitive areas, conducting inventories and monitoring cultural resources, and procuring funding for projects and staff.
