Funcionarios de NM respaldan la política de "Tierras Salvajes"

BERNALILLO, N.M. – Se dice que las tierras salvajes en Nuevo México, así como las del resto del Oeste, bien valen por lo menos un vistazo. Más de veinte funcionarios electos de Nuevo México, considerados clave, manifiestan su apoyo al Secretario del Interior, Ken Salazar, en torno a una nueva iniciativa que busca proteger las tierras salvajes del Oeste. Esta política permitiría al Bureau or Land Management (Oficina de Control de Tierras) identificar terrenos que el Congreso quisiera algún día proteger como Salvajes, y mantener fuera de ellos a la industria y otras actividades destructivas, hasta que el Congreso tome la decisión final.

La Comisionda del Condado de Bernalillo por el Primer Distrito, Michelle Luján Grisham, es una entre las docenas de funcionarios del Oeste que firmaron una carta de apoyo enviada a Salazar esta semana. Luján dice que espera trabajar con el Bureau of Land Management (Oficina de Control de Tierras) para encontrar qué estrategias aplicar cerca de Albuquerque, de forma que esas tierras queden protegidas.

"Muchas de las áreas cerca de las Montañas Sandía están relacionadas con áreas silvestres, Creo que es una gran oportunidad que tenemos de mejorar nuestra relación con la Oficina del Manejo de Tierras y de hacer más por la protección de la vida silvestre."

La iniciativa ha sido objetada por grupos de la industria petrolera y gasera, quienes argumentan que estancarían futuros contratos de perforación. Sin embargo, quienes la apoyan señalan que un hay un gran número de tierras alquiladas para desarrollo energético que han estado inactivas y sub-desarrolladas durante años.

Jennifer Hobson es la Ex Subsecretaria de Turismo en Nuevo México y actualmente la vocera del centro turístico y Spa “Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs”. Ella hace notar la importancia de proteger las tierras salvajes y paisajes desde ambos sectores, el público y el privado.

"Nuestras tierras salvajes son uno de nuestros mayores recursos y el turismo de Nuevo México en general tiene un impacto anual de seis billones de dólares en la economía; es enormemente importante."

El grupo de funcionarios electos de Nuevo México que firmaron la carta en apoyo a esta política, incluye alcaldes, consejeros ciudadanos, comisionados de condados y diputados estatales, incluyendo al líder de la mayoría en la Cámara.
