The Easter Bunny is Not a Pet

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Don't give children pets for Easter. That's the message from the Humane Society each year around this time. Adam Goldfarb, director of the Society's "Pets at Risk" program, says generally people are getting the message that baby chicks don't make good house pets, but many parents still give their kids baby bunnies at Easter. And that's where the problems begin, he warns.

"They might have a very cute Easter, but unfortunately the novelty of having a rabbit and the reality of caring for them long-term, kind of wears off."

Experts caution Nevada consumers that buying a rabbit is similar to buying a dog, because with proper veterinary care both can be expected to live at least 10 years.

David March is an Animal Control supervisor in Clark County who says impulse buying doesn't just happen at Easter. It happens every day with cats and dogs, and the best way to prevent that is to think about the big picture before making a pet purchase.

"You want to examine your lifestyle and research what kind of care and attention the potential pet is going to require from you, to ensure that it's going to fit with your family."

Joyce Garrity is an executive with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and she is also a grandmother. She has suggestions for all those relatives who are tempted to arrive on Easter Sunday with a bunny rabbit as a present.

"You can make yours chocolate, or I give my grandchildren stuffed bunnies from the toy store for Easter."
