Oil Drilling Opponents Rally at MA Beaches

SOUTH BOSTON, Mass. - Hundreds of Bay Staters are expected to gather Saturday at Massachusetts beaches for the second annual "Hands Across the Sand" event. Their message: No to offshore drilling, and yes to clean energy.

Massachsuetts relies heavily on the ocean for tourism and fishing, says Zachary Alton, climate and energy campaign organizer for Oceana, one of the groups organizing area events. The idea, he says, is to send a nonpartisan message to legislators that it's time to change our energy policies - and that the United States cannot afford another oil spill.

"I think that if we saw a spill even of half the magnitude of the one we saw in the gulf, Massachusetts would be devastated."

Despite the controversy surrounding the Cape Wind Project, Alton says, he sees offshore wind as a much safer and cleaner alternative to offshore oil drilling.

"There's some people who are firmly against offshore wind for various reasons. It surprises me, because I think an oil spill would be much, much more devastating to the economies along the coast of Massachusetts."

Alton will lead an event at noon at South Boston's Castle Beach. Other events will be held simultaneously in Hull, Falmouth, Gloucester and Martha's Vineyard, as well as at noon local time at beaches around the nation. Attendees will join hands for 15 minutes while standing along waterways. Details are online at handsacrossthesand.com.
