LAS CRUCES, N. M. – Lo que una vez fue campo abierto en los ranchos de Nuevo México, poco a poco se ha convertido en desarrollo urbano tras su venta, en lugar de ser heredado. Es un cambio que se platicó durante el reciente foro Agricultural Land Conservation (Conservación de Tierras Agrícolas) del Departamento de Agricultura de Nuevo México.

Los dueños de esas tierras que asistieron al foro aprendieron sobre cómo usar servidumbres de conservación agrícola relacionadas con incentivos hacia impuestos para conservar la tierra. Un grupo de rancheros y agricultores de Nuevo México participaron en un panel de discusiones sobre sus experiencias exitosas usando servidumbres de conservación agrícolas que al mismo tiempo mantienen a la tierra produciendo. Uno de ellos es Dale Armstrong, ranchero cerca de Magdalena.

"Creo que las generaciones futuras estarán agradecidas de que personas hicieron esto para conservar la tierra y creo que el gobierno reconoce que estamos valorando la tierra al conservarla y por ello dan incentivos de impuestos."

Él mantiene en operación su rancho de ganado sin interrupciones. Añade que para los rancheros que quieren continuar en este negocio, al prometer mantener sus tierras agrícolas bajo una servidumbre de conservación agrícola, verán una disminución en sus impuestos.

"Existe una deducción federal que cuando recibes ingresos entonces recibes crédito del estado y puedes vender esos créditos para poder pagar por las ganancias de participar en la servidumbre de conservación agrícola."

Armstrong dice que mientras algunos rancheros puede que resistan estas servidumbres, él no ha tenido experiencias negativas.
