DES MOINES, Iowa - Octubre es el "Mes de la Conversación" – diseñado para ayudar a animar a que los padres tengan conversaciones sobre sexualidad con sus hijos. Rhonda Ruby con el Planned Parenthood del Heartland dice que puede ser un tema que es difícil para los padres saber cuándo abordarlo con los hijos, y que tanto se debe conversar sobre el tema, pero hay beneficios que considerar.

"Sabemos que cuando esas conversaciones están sucediendo, es más probable que los jóvenes retrasen comenzar a tener relaciones sexuales, que tengan menos parejas, y que tengan la habilidad de utilizar condones y otro tipo de protección al tener relaciones."

Ruby comenta que tienen un sitio de Internet completo que ayuda a dar ideas a los padres para comenzar la conversación, así como guías para información por grupos de diferentes edades.

"Nunca es muy temprano para comenzar esta conversación. Claro, se debe tener la conversación al nivel que pueda comprender el menor, basado en su edad, porque lo que le digas a un niño de 8 años va a ser diferente de lo que le dices a un niño de 18, así que véalo como un proceso que puede ser hecho en fases."

Añade que el miedo más grande que tienen los padres es que si hablan del tema, será interpretado como si estuvieran dando permiso a los hijos a tener relaciones sexuales, pero Ruby dice que estudios han demostrado que ese no es el caso – y de hecho, las generaciones jóvenes quieren escuchar esta información de la boca de sus padres.
