Don't Count Winter Out Yet in MA

BOSTON - Over the weekend, it was close to 50 degrees in Boston, but reviving Bay State-style winter driving skills will more than likely be necessary soon. Mary Maguire of Triple-A Southern New England says now is the time to make sure your battery and tires are ready for the wintry weather ahead. She also suggests that your cell phone is an important part of any winter emergency planning.

"You don't want to be left stranded without being able to call for help, so having the cell phone charger can be really important."

The last big snowfall in Massachusetts was the Halloween storm that dumped nearly 30 inches of snow in some parts of the state and knocked out power for several days.

Maguire says the lack of snow and cold has meant fewer calls to Triple-A to get people out of trouble so far this winter.

"Historically, we are probably down about five percent in terms of roadside assistance calls from a typical year."

Maguire adds it's important to keep thinking about safe winter driving habits because, despite the gift of mild weather from Mother Nature so far, there's a lot of winter left.

"As we all know in New England, February and March can both be, you know, extremely cold and stormy and snowy, and sometimes, even into April."

She says things like jumper cables can be essential tools for starting vehicles with weak or dead batteries, but they should only be used by individuals who are familiar with the proper safety precautions.
