PHOENIX – La semana pasada se anunció la restricción a la explotación de una nueva mina de uranio cerca del Gran Cañón. Con tal motivo, un grupo latino sin fines de lucro transmite por la radio un mensaje al Presidente Obama, agradeciéndole su apoyo a dicha prohibición con un original... "Muchas gracias, President Obama". Los anuncios, hablados en español y difundidos por el grupo "Mi Familia Vota", hacen un reconocimiento a Obama por proteger el legado del Gran Cañón.

"El Gran Cañón, el río Colorado y sus alrededores son nuestros patrimonio."

Ben Monterroso, Director Ejecutivo del grupo, afirma que esta prohibición minera es importante, pero para los latinos también es importante que el Presidente considere la nominación de más monumentos y parques nacionales en el Oeste, para preservar algo del legado latino americano.

"Nevada, Colorado, Nuevo México y Arizona comparten los mismos valores en términos de su larga historia con la tierra, y el medio ambiente de este país."

Asegura que frecuentemente se tiene el concepto equivocado de que a la comunidad latina le interesa únicamente el tema de la inmigración.

"Como a cualesquier otros votantes de los Estados Unidos, nos interesa la educación. Nos interesan los cuidados a la salud. Nos importa la economía y los buenos empleos. Para ser francos, el tema ambiental nadie siente realmente que nos importe, pero es algo en lo que estamos profundamente involucrados."

Monterroso dio a conocer que "Mi Familia Vota" extendió una invitación al Presidente Obama para que se reúna con líderes hispanos y exploren juntos la posible protección de más tierras públicas en el oeste.
