Wyomingites: You've Earned a Say

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Wyomingites are being invited to add their two cents when it comes to health care and retirement. AARP is kicking off the "You've Earned a Say" campaign today, partially in response to polling that shows 95 percent of Americans think federal lawmakers should spend more time listening to ordinary folks about Social Security and Medicare.

Tim Summers with AARP Wyoming explains the rationale.

"We want to take the conversation on Medicare and Social Security out of Washington and give it to the people who've paid into these programs and give them a voice in the debate."

Summers says because it's an election year, political rhetoric has caused confusion, and in Congress, much of the debate is happening behind closed doors. So part of the campaign will focus on education, he says.

"AARP is helping Americans get the facts on Social Security and on Medicare and decide for themselves what should be done."

According to Summers, about 91,000 Wyomingites use Social Security and 81,000 are enrolled in Medicare.

The AARP "You've Earned a Say" campaign will feature community conversations and forums. A questionnaire to complete and more information are available at www.earnedasay.org, where results will be reported.
