El más nuevo Monumento Nacional de Colorado

CHIMNEY ROCK, Colo. – Esta semana el Presidente declaró Monumento Nacional a Chimney Rock, y en Colorado esto es motivo de una celebración poco usual. El sitio, ubicado en el sur oeste de Colorado, fue asentamiento de la tribu nativa pueblo, de los Estados Unidos hace unos mil años, y tenía una población aproximada de dos mil personas. También es el lugar de la espectacular salida de la Luna entre las agujas gemelas de roca cada 18 años y medio.

Tony Simmons es el Presidente y Cervecero Máster en la empresa cervecera Pagosa, justo camino abajo del nuevo monumento. Su compañía fue uno de los más de 120 negocios locales que pidieron al Presidente hacer la designación, y para celebrar creó una nueva cerveza artesanal inspirada en la tribu Pueblo.

“Esta cerveza contiene ingredientes que no siempre encontrarías en muchas otras cervezas artesanales, o en cualquiera, para el caso, incluyendo chayote, frijol anazasi, maíz dulce y un toquecito de tuna.”

Esta tarde, el Senador Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) y el Secretario del Interior Ken Salazar estarán en el nuevo monumento para celebrar la designación. Simmons dice que después la cervecería tendrá una fiesta, que también incluye una comida inspirada en las tradiciones pueblo.

Al White, director del Colorado Department of Tourism (Departamento de Turismo de Colorado), dice que esta nueva designación es buena para el estado; un estudio realizado por el National Trust for Historic Preservation (Fideicomiso Nacional para la Preservación Histórica), encontró que la designación pudiera duplicar los dólares del turismo en la región.

“Lo que sea que ayude a elevar la imagen de Colorado ayudará a traer más turistas. Y los turistas gastan dinero.”

White dice que el turismo es una industria de 15 billones de dólares que ayuda a reducir los pagos de impuestos de los Coloradinos; aporta el equivalente a 600 dólares en impuestos por cada familia de cuatro integrantes en el estado.
