Tax Headache Protection? The Tax-Aide Program

HELENA, Mont. - No need to hit the panic button yet: There's still more than a month to file taxes. Volunteers at the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program are standing by in Montana, and they offer help for free.

According to AARP Montana state president Joy Bruck, low- and moderate-income filers really can't afford to hire tax preparers, and doing the returns "on your own" is a tricky business.

"There's no question that over the years, the U.S. Tax Code has become more complicated and confusing - I think, sometimes, overwhelming," Bruck remarked.

Close to 200 Tax-Aide volunteers are assisting in Montana this year. The volunteers go through special training and are certified by the IRS. More than 10,000 people used the service in Montana last year.

Bruck said that families of all ages can qualify for the help, and there is special focus on the Earned Income Tax Credit for working households. Those families are at the lower end of the pay scale, and Tax-Aide helps keep them away from "rapid refund" tax anticipation loans that mean they don't receive the full amount.

"I mean, we're in a tough economy and so, people on fixed incomes, every dollar they can get back really helps," Bruck added.

Montana's Tax-Aide program secured more than $4 million in total refunds for state taxpayers last year. Those interested should make an appointment, either online or by calling 1-888-AARP-NOW.
