Health Care Rally Day in Helena

HELENA, Mont. - The debate about whether to expand Medicaid is hot at the Capitol today. The Montana Human Rights Network is busing hundreds of people in from around the state for a hearing, a rally, and meetings with lawmakers, making the case that expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act is good for the state.

There is concern about the cost of extending coverage to 60,000 Montanans when federal support declines. According to Joy Bruck, AARP Montana state president, another issue is the belief that if Montana says "no," it reduces the federal deficit.

"Well, it isn't, because what will happen is that money will go other states. For instance, Arizona, who has decided now to expand Medicaid, or Florida, or North Dakota."

Bruck is testifying at the hearing, focusing on the estimated 12,000 new jobs and $4 billion worth of economic activity that could result if the state expands the health coverage.

Under the expansion, health coverage would be available to those who have lost their jobs, or have jobs at companies that don't offer health insurance. Bruck pointed out that certain age groups are affected more than others.

"People 50 to 64, if they've lost their jobs: jobs are a little harder to come by, and particularly those jobs that would provide health care benefits," she said.

Governor Steve Bullock has said he supports expanding Medicaid, but legislative support hasn't been strong.

Buses are leaving from Billings, Bozeman and Missoula this morning.

A press conference and rally are scheduled at noon on the Statehouse steps. The hearing is at 3 p.m. for HB 390, the bill to expand Medicaid.
