UPS Makes it Easy for Nevadans to Fight Senior Hunger

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Too many Nevada seniors are not putting enough food on the table, so starting today local UPS stores are teaming up with AARP and Three Square in a food drive.

Rhonda DiGennaro is an area franchisee for UPS in southern Nevada. She said her UPS Store decided to team up with others in the effort after she and co-workers attended an AARP forum where they learned about the startling number of Nevada seniors experiencing food insecurity.

"When we found out what kind of numbers were involved - approximately 80,000 is what we were told - we decided that with the generous customers coming into our store, we could make an impact and try to make a difference," DiGennaro said.

Now through Labor Day, Nevadans can help fight hunger by dropping off nonperishable food items at any of the 64 locally-owned UPS Stores in southern Nevada.

AARP-Nevada State Director Carla Sloan said the state is above the national average for the number of seniors at risk for hunger, and the problem can sometimes seem overwhelming until it is tackled in a team effort.

"These kinds of community collaborations where we have UPS, Three Square and AARP are really wonderful models for how we can address social issues," Sloan said. "Nobody can do it by themselves; we must work together."

DiGennaro said many UPS Stores are located in marketplaces where Nevadans making their own food purchases can easily drop off non-perishable donations.

"People are dropping food off; we have a number of mailbox customers who have generously donated. We are taking in one item at a time, or multiple items," DiGennaro said.

While the focus is on the UPS marketplace locations that allow Nevadans to help hungry seniors while they shop, she added, there are also UPS Stores in Caesar's Casino properties, where lucky winners are invited to share a bit of their loot.

A UPS Store locator is available at www.TheUPSStore.com. A list of most-needed items can be found at www.ThreeSquare.org.
