Suicide in North Dakota Drops, While National Rate Climbs

BISMARCK, N.D. - While the suicide rate in the U.S. continues to climb, North Dakota's rate is starting to head the other direction. Micki Savelkoul, suicide prevention program director, North Dakota Department of Health, said the latest figures show a drop in the number of people taking their own lives, albeit modest.

"It's a pretty small decrease. We went from 114 suicides in 2011, to 107 in 2012," Savelkoul said.

One way friends, family and neighbors can help prevent suicide is to reach out to those who are showing signs, like talking about death or isolating themselves, she added.

While elderly men are most likely to take their own lives, young people are always at heightened risk, Savelkoul warned, and lately, there has been a troublesome increase in suicides among middle-aged men - some possibly linked to the recession and job losses.

"One of the things that nationally has gained attention in the last couple months is that it is our working-aged males that are an increasing population in suicides, and we're seeing that trend in North Dakota, too," she noted.

Nationally, the suicide rate among people ages 35 to 64 increased by nearly 30 percent between 1999 and 2010. September is National Suicide Prevention Month. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
