"Spreading Some Good" to Help Older Ohioans

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohioans are being encouraged to "Spread Some Good" to fight hunger among the state's older residents.

AARP Ohio and Walgreens stores are joining forces this month to raise money for the bulk purchase of low-salt, low-sugar peanut butter. The Ohio Association of Foodbanks will distribute the peanut butter to local food pantries for distribution. Joree Jacobs, the association's communications director, said it's a terrific choice for older adults.

"It's highly nutritious and a really good source of protein," she said. "With these funds, we're going to be able to purchase low-sodium, low-sugar peanut butter, which is going to be great for the older adults that are going to receive this peanut butter."

Today through Sept. 17, Walgreens customers can donate to Spread Some Good at the checkout register. The more each store collects, the more peanut butter goes to the food pantries in that community.

While it's now a statewide effort, AARP Ohio volunteer Ed Cokley said "Spread Some Good" began as a pilot project with just a few Walgreens stores and proved enormously successful. He said it's part of AARP's "Drive to End Hunger," which focuses on fighting hunger among older people.

"It's not only Ohio but across the country," he said. "There's nearly 9 million Americans who are age 50 or older and at risk every day for hunger - and this is a 79 percent increase, in just the last 10 years."

With proposals for major funding cuts for food stamps, Cokely said the need for assistance soon could be even greater.

AARP members and staff, along with Walgreens workers, also will be volunteering at food banks in major Ohio cities on Sept. 11 during the National Day of Service.
