BOISE, Idaho - Teen birth rates have fallen in Idaho and around the nation, reaching historic lows, according to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures. So what's going on? The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy has found that more teens are delaying sex, and more of them are using contraceptives.

Paula Gianino with Planned Parenthood said that parents are powerful in influencing children's decisions - and when it comes to sex, there should be an ongoing discussion.

"When we can increase communication in the home, teens feel more supported, and they just do better - not only around sexual decision-making, but a whole host of other issues," Gianino said.

In families that use positive communication, kids are more likely to make good choices, she added.

Teens are inundated with sexual messages in the media and among friends, Gianino said, adding that it is possible for Idaho students to graduate from high school without receiving solid information about sexuality and reproduction.

"The majority of teens graduate in this state without receiving any sexual-health education at all. Just simply, schools leave it out, because they believe it's too 'controversial,'" she said.

Idaho's teen pregnancy rate has fallen by about 50 percent since 1991. Nationwide, the CDC reported, teen birth rates dropped six percentage points in 2012, to 29 births per thousand.

The report also noted that teen birth rates varied in some communities, with the highest rate for Hispanic and African-American teens, and the lowest rate for Asians.

The CDC report is at http://www.cdc.gov. Information for parents to give children is available at http://answer.rutgers.edu.
