Tuesday, October 22, 2013

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - As the fall veto session of the state Legislature begins, several thousand Illinoisans will descend on Springfield today to show lawmakers their support for the freedom to marry. Governor Pat Quinn will join LGBT families and allies, along with leaders from labor, immigrant, business and other groups in the first-ever March on Springfield for Marriage Equality.

According to the co-chair of the March, Tracy Baim, all citizens should be treated equally, regardless of sexual orientation or gender.

"It's one of the most day-to-day issues that we ever deal with in the gay community," she declared. "Not everyone experiences hate crimes, not everybody goes to the pride parade, but almost everybody at some point in their lives has a relationship where they want to cement that through the rights and responsibilities."

The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act has passed the state Senate and Quinn has said he will sign it, so it's now up to the Illinois House to pass it.

Baim said the LGBT community deserves to have access to the rights and responsibilities that come with marriage.

That includes "even some of the most basic things, like access to visitation in the hospital and the right to be buried at a congressional cemetery if your partner was in the military. But on a day-to-day basis we're talking about equality in terms of the IRS, in terms of state taxes, in terms of estate taxes," she said.

Baim said she hopes the march will help show state leaders how people across the state, from all walks of life, can work together on the issue of marriage equality.

"There's never been a march on Springfield for LGBT rights, so this is going to be historic. No matter what happens, we want to show that Illinoisans can come together for LGBT community."

The March on Springfield rally will take place from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. After the rally, LGBT families will lead the attendees on a march around the State Capitol.
