LAS VEGAS – Tobacco users in Nevada are being asked to kick the habit – for at least 24 hours – as part of Great American Smokeout today.

Kristen Power, communications director for the Nevada Cancer Coalition, says about one in five Silver State residents is a smoker.

She notes that those who stop smoking can feel healthier almost immediately.

"They will find that they have decreased coughing and decreased shortness of breath,” she explains. “If they can continue it beyond that 24 hours they will see even more benefit, like reduced risk of infection, better circulation and lung function."

Power says research shows nearly 70 percent of smokers want to quit, and about half of them try to stop each year.

She points out the Great American Smokeout is a day for all Americans to encourage others to kick a deadly habit.

"It's not a day just for smokers,” she stresses. “It's a day for nonsmokers to encourage those people they know that smoke, to try not smoking for 24 hours."

According to the Nevada Cancer Coalition, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S.

Smokers can get more information and support through the Nevada Tobacco Users Helpline at 1-800-QUITNOW (1-800-784-8669).
