Charitable Giving Encouraged on Giving Tuesday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Now that the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend has finally come to an end, Ohioans are encouraged to turn their attention to those less fortunate.

Today is Giving Tuesday, a campaign created last year to create a national day of charitable giving.

Keith Burwell, president and CEO of the Toledo Community Foundation, says it's a nice reminder to give thanks while helping out your fellow man.

"We just think it's a good thing for the community so we have picked it up and started promoting it as a way of centering ourselves back on what's important and those who are not quite as privileged as we are," he says.

Burwell encourages people to find ways to give back in their own communities by donating their time or money to local nonprofit organizations.

An estimated 2,500 organizations across the country participated in Giving Tuesday last year, and the number this year is expected to grow to 8,000.

Burwell says Giving Tuesday can bring out the best in people, and it's a way to celebrate giving as a community, and not be focused on one particular cause or organization.

"I think it's the easiest and best expression of who we are as a society, here is how we care for one another,” he says. “It's one of the unique features of what we call America, is philanthropy, it's just here we are as a community and on this day we will celebrate as a community of giving. "

Ohioans are encouraged to connect with the day of giving by sharing on social media with the hashtag #GivingTuesday.
