ALBUQUERQUE, N. Mex. – The massive data breach at Target Stores that exposed debit and credit information for millions of shoppers is likely leading to even more dangers ahead.

Connie Quillen, executive assistant of the Better Business Bureau of New Mexico and Southwest Colorado, says scammers may already be using this case as a backdrop when sending out virus-laden email messages.

"Absolutely do not click on any links in the email,” she advises. “I always suggest actually deleting the email and deleting it from your deleted box – completely getting rid of it."

The breach impacts customers who made credit or debit card purchases at Target between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15.

Target says it takes the privacy of shopper information very seriously and worked swiftly to resolve the incident.

Target is also warning those who think they might be affected to be vigilant about their credit and debit accounts.

Quillen agrees it's a good time to keep a watchful eye on your debit and credit transactions, in case bogus charges appear.

"Don't wait for your bank statement to come once a month,” she says. “If you can, log in online and monitor that information every day, to make sure that there aren't any charges showing up that aren't yours."

Quillen adds with the ever-growing number of identify theft crimes, staying aware of fraud and scams is something that folks should resolve to do year-round.
