SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - With an estimated one in five women sexually assaulted during college, a new effort is under way to help schools do a better job with prevention and response.

The White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault has 90 days to come up with recommendations. Those should include the training of college leadership and responders on treating the issue as the serious crime it is, said Polly Poskin, executive director of the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

"A rape is a crime and it should be investigated as a crime,” she said. “Incidents of rape on college campuses are never really brought to the public attention. These should not really be handled and managed as kind of an internal affair."

She said those who have been sexually assaulted are more likely later to have depression, battle substance abuse or suffer from a wide range of physical ailments.

The Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault is comprised of 29 community-based sexual-assault crisis centers. Poskin said this renewed call to action by the president will build upon their efforts to end sexual violence.

"It gives us some affirmation that the programs and the work that the rape crisis centers are doing at the local level is being paid attention to at the national level,” she said, “and we're very excited to be the people to help carry it forward."

In announcing the creation of the task force, President Obama also called on men to become more involved in prevention. In the United States, it's estimated that about 22 million women and 1.6 million men have been sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.

Data on sexual assault is online at iowacasa.org. Obama’s address is at whitehouse.gov.
