RENO, Nev. - A group from Northern Nevada has people on the ground at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics as part of the ongoing effort to bring the winter games to Lake Tahoe.

The Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition has two board members in Russia, blogging about the games and supporting several U.S. athletes from the Nevada region. As chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition, Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki said his group is working hard to make Lake Tahoe the site of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

"We are regularly engaged in these kind of activities," he said, "including participating in the Olympic Game structure, whether it's having a presence at the Team USA House or other venues, other federations."

Krolicki said it's not yet clear whether the U.S. Olympic Committee will compete to host the 2026 Winter Games. The International Olympic Committee ultimately decides where the games take place.

Northern Nevada does have a bit of Olympic history. The 1960 Winter Olympics were held about 40 miles southwest of Reno in Squaw Valley, Calif.

Krolicki said Reno-Tahoe, and Nevada as a whole, has the infrastructure to host the games. He cited the area's world-class ski resorts, an abundance of hotel rooms, good roads and highways, and more than a half-century in the hospitality business.

Krolicki said the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City left a positive economic legacy.

"If you look at the tourism and visitation numbers for Salt Lake 'post' the games, they were skyrocketing," he said. "There's some of the best start-up companies in this country now are in Salt Lake because of some of the high-tech infrastructure that was remaining after the games."

Krolicki said the winter games in Salt Lake City cost about $2 billion to host, but ultimately turned a profit of about $100 million. He said the host city for the 2026 Winter Olympics will be determined at least seven years in advance.
