ST. PAUL, Minn. - What started as little more than a seed of an idea some 20 years ago is really coming to fruition in Minnesota with the growing popularity of community-supported agriculture. According to Brian Devore, communication director for the Land Stewardship Project, CSA projects allow consumers looking for fresh and local foods to buy shares in a farming operation on an annual basis.

"You become kind of a member of the farm, and then in return during the growing season you get a weekly delivery of produce," as Devore described the way it works. "And most of the farms do focus on producing fruits and vegetables, although in recent years some have expanded into providing other products such as meat products, eggs, that type of thing."

Devore said more than 75 CSA farms are now serving people across Minnesota and in Western Wisconsin.

In addition to supporting local agriculture and reaping the benefits with the fresh goods, he said, CSAs also bring people together.

"It's an opportunity to become part of a community and join up with a farm and learn exactly how your food is being produced," he said. "It's a great way for families to get in contact with that whole food production system and really get to know the faces behind your food a little bit."

Devore cautioned that subscriptions are often sold out by early spring, so he encourages people to reserve their shares now. More information and a free directory of CSA farms are available online at the Land Stewardship Project website or at the LSP offices in Lewiston, Minneapolis and Montevideo.
