Las escuelas de WA ayudan a que los padres vean los cambios del método “Common Core”

YAKIMA, Wash. – Cuando llegue el otoño, la pedagogía de Common Core Standards (Parámetros Comunes Fundamentales), estará totalmente implementada en los salones que aplican el sistema Washington K-12. Lograr que este programa funcione en los salones de clase desde pre escolar hasta el doceavo grado, implica familiarizar a los padres con el sistema, no sólo a los maestros y alumnos. Por eso, tanto escuelas como voluntarios colaboran para contactar a los padres especialmente de la comunidad latina.

En los talleres como el que se imparte esta semana en la escuela McKinley Elementary de Yakima, los padres se dan una idea de lo que se espera de sus estudiantes con el método Common Core. Micaela Razo, organizadora de campo en la League of Education Voters (Liga de Votantes de la Educación), dice que los padres de familia de Yakima se entusiasmaron y se mostraron satisfechos de que haya estándares consistentes para aprender.

“Muchos de esos padres a quienes les hablamos son trabajadores migrantes, o sea que viajan de estado en estado con su estudiante. Así que comprender que esto no se trata de algo local, sino nacional, tiene mucho significado para ellos.”

Washington adoptó los parámetros Common Core en 2011, y el año que viene será el primero en que estén completamente instrumentados. Al taller que se realizó en Yakima asistieron más de 100 padres. Razo afirma que la Liga de Votantes de la Educación y School’s Out Washington ayudan con eventos similares por todo el estado.

Agregó que estos padres hicieron muchas preguntas sobre lo que distingue a los métodos de enseñanza del Common Core, el cual se enfoca en desarrollar las habilidades de pensamiento crítico en los alumnos mientras aprenden.

“En vez de sólo ‘El problema es este’, decir ¿cómo sucedió el problema? Esa diferencia hace que el alumno piense, explore y pueda decir, ‘Caray, así está el problema pero también puedo resolverlo de este otro modo’.”
