Study: Marriage Equality Would Add Million$ to Nevada Economy

CARSON CITY, Nev. - A recent study shows that marriage equality could add millions of dollars to Nevada's economy.

Ward Curtin, state director at Freedom Nevada, said the study showed that legalizing same-sex marriage would generate $53 million in spending in the first three years, and more than $4 million in sales tax revenue.

"This is a very conservative estimate." said Curtin. "Obviously, with Nevada being the wedding capital of the world and a destination state for weddings, we think we're going to see a lot of traffic from out-of-state couples looking to come here to secure their lifetime commitment of marriage."

Curtin added that he believes the research, which uses U.S. Census Bureau data, is conservative. The economic projections are based on half of Nevada's approximately 7,000 same-sex couples getting married.

According to Curtin, some of Nevada's biggest casinos support legalizing same-sex marriage.

"We've now got the public support from Wynn Resorts, MGM Grand, Tropicana and Caesars," Curtin said. "We're working with several wedding-related businesses such as florists, bakers, and obviously wedding chapels."

Curtin said efforts are under way in the state legislature that could result in a future ballot measure to try and overturn 'Question 2,' the voter-approved ballot measure that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
