CARSON CITY, Nev. - Nevadans who enjoy working with numbers might enjoy volunteering for the AARP Foundation's Tax-Aide program, which provides free tax-preparation services for thousands of people in the state.

Hilarie Grey, communications director for AARP Nevada, said the organization is seeking volunteers to train in advance of the program going live early next year.

"Over the years in Nevada," she said, "we've had people like car dealers and flight attendants and teachers and engineers that just enjoy helping people and like working with numbers."

Grey said the training is Internal Revenue Service-certified for the Tax-Aide volunteers, who work out of about 40 locations across the state. She said the program, geared toward seniors and low- to moderate-income taxpayers, helped more than 12,000 people in Nevada get more than $10 million in tax refunds last year.

Grey said volunteers are asked to commit to working about 40 hours at a Tax-Aide site between February and April. She says it would help the program grow if more people in rural areas would volunteer.

"We had a very successful site in Pahrump this year," she said. "We've had sites in Fallon and in Elko. The more people we get from a variety of places around the state, the more we can extend the reach of the program."

Grey said Tax-Aide is in its 46th year and is the nation's largest free tax assistance and preparation service. For more information on volunteering, visit the AARP Nevada website at aarp.org/NV.
