LOS ANGELES - The San Gabriel Mountains are becoming the country's newest national monument. President Obama is in Southern California today to sign the designation that will protect 346,000 acres of forest lands. Claire Robinson, managing director with Amigos de los Rios, says this will increase the connection between urban areas and the forest, and give many disadvantaged families access to nature.

"The great cities of the world always have an amazing balance between nature and culture, and that's what this is all about," Robinson says. "For Latino families, this is the only access to rejuvenation, recreation and nature."

Supporters say the designation will protect the forest lands that make up more than 70 percent of the region's open space. Located within an hour's drive of millions of people, the area already attracts three-million visitors a year. That's expected to increase with more hiking trails, staffing and visitor services.

Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel, executive director of The Community Hiking Club in Santa Clarita is at today's signing ceremony. She says she's been working for the last six months to establish the first hiking trail.

"It's just a little two-and-a-half mile trail, but it's a beginning. And we're hoping this monument brings us more trails, trailheads, services at the trailheads, more law enforcement, things like that. So, very exciting," she says.

The San Gabriel Mountains Forever group has been trying to get greater protections for more than a decade.

Congresswoman Judy Chu had asked the president for the designation after her bill for a National Recreation Area stalled in Congress. Opponents have argued the designation would interfere with private property owners' rights. This will be the 13th time Obama has used his authority under the Antiquities Act to designate a national monument.
