AUSTIN, Texas - With the arrival of Halloween, a reminder that a bag of candy isn't all treats for the one in thirteen kids who suffers from food allergies. Dr. Bill Howland with the Allergy and Asthma Center of Austin says there are eight common food allergies including dairy, eggs and nuts. That means chocolate and candy bars are out, since they either contain nuts or there's a risk of cross contamination.

"They may be on the same conveyor belts or made in the same vats," Howland says. "This can be peanuts or what we refer to as tree nuts, which is pecans, walnuts, cashews, etc. So if you're sensitive it only takes a tiny amount to set off a reaction."

One option is to have some non-food items to hand out such as stickers, pencils or little toys. Those families taking part are asked to put out a pumpkin that's painted teal, indicating the house is allergy-safe.

The goal of the Teal Pumpkin Project, explains Howland, is to make the fun and excitement around dressing up and trick-or-treating more inclusive.

"The kids that have food allergies can still participate in Halloween, but not have the risk of possibly getting a candy that they get sick from," he says.

Because of the risks, it's also suggested children with food allergies don't eat any candy while out trick-or-treating, but wait until they've returned home and have had the goodies inspected by their parents.
