Put on Purple to Support Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

INDIANAPOLIS – Hoosiers and others around the world are encouraged to don purple today to mark the first World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day.

Julie Fleshman, president and CEO of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, says because pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly types of cancer, efforts to build awareness have been slow over the years.

She explains that with other diseases that have strong movements, it's the patients and survivors themselves who are carrying the advocacy flag.

"In this case it's really families who have been touched by the disease who have had to pick up that flag and move forward, and it's taken longer to build up momentum," she says.

Fleshman points out the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is just 6 percent.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were an average of 749 pancreatic cancer deaths annually in Indiana from 2007 to 2011.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer can include back pain, jaundice and unexplained weight loss.

Fleshman says the disease spreads quickly and is rarely diagnosed in its first stages.

"Usually by the time the disease is diagnosed, it's late stage and it's difficult to treat at that point and so there needs to be more research funding – both publicly and privately – invested in pancreatic cancer research so we can find better treatment options and early detection methods," she says.

Fleshman adds the goals are to raise money for research and educate people about pancreatic cancer.

"For people that have never heard about pancreatic cancer research, we want them to learn about it, we want them to understand that this is a disease that the incidence is increasing in the United States and across the world, and we want them to take action and to get involved," she says.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, and is predicted to become the second by 2020.
